Small Breed Dog Potty Training

Why dog lovers have this preconceived idea that small breed puppies are more difficult to train than medium sized or larger breed canines, I will never be able to know. Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should never be a problem.

Small dog training, is no different from training a puppy of any other sized breed. Whereas training any puppy will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, invariably all other features remain identical, and the approach to training the puppy should remain the same, not withstanding its size.

Never the less, I will make an exception here, and accept that small dog training may offer issues in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the size of the dog breed is small, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.

If a tiny breed puppy dog is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a small breed puppy dog cannot be bathroom trained or poses challenges in being potty trained, it is the owner who has not knowingly contributed to this situation. Let us look at how and why.

Aggression.

Smallish dogs are loved because they are cute, they are like dolls. Owners get pleasure from having their puppy sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the trouble starts. The innate aggressive character of the canine, is to claim ownership over its world, its food, even its owner; all puppies want to be the alpha dog.

It is the aggressive streak in the canine animal that makes it to place itself on the lap of its master, above all when there are a good number of persons seated in the room.

This is a blatant act of aggression. Instead of admonishing the dog, every owner with the exception of none, would cuddle the dog, notwithstanding that it jumped on to their lap without being asked to, fostering the aggressive streak in the animal. As a result the owner has accepted the pooch's instinct to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting angry at a a bigger size dog is another outright act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is looked on as cute, because one dog is little while the other is bigger. Most owners shower affection on the dog instead of admonishing it, when it stands this aggression towards a larger dog.

These are but examples as to why small dogs are aggressive, and it s not because small dog training is very difficult.

Bathroom Training

Owners are inclined to tote their small puppies around where ever they are, even at home and that makes it plain difficult to bathroom train them

It is as a reflex action that the owners of smallish breed dogs to carry the animal to the area where the puppy should go to the bathroom and then lug it back into the house.

It is this habit of carrying the dog to its appointed toilet area that is the origin of all roadblocks. In addition, as the pup is as a general rule carried around such a lot it has no way of it suggesting to or notifying the owner that it has to go the toilet.

Small dog training begins with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be moved to their toilet area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their miniature breed dogs they would have no problems in training them.

Dog crate training, is the most exciting part of pup training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training.
