As many of you have most likely heard, the CPSC has declared a notification to caregivers and how they manage their newborns in their baby sling. |A little over a week ago, the CPSC issued a caution for parents to use caution while handling their newborns in baby slings.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission urged caregivers to "be cautious when using infant slings for babies younger than four months of age." It also urged parents of preemies, twins, babies in fragile health and those of low weights to use additional care and take up with their pediatricians about utilizing slings. "We know of too many deaths in these slings and we now know the hazard scenarios for very small babies," said CPSC chair Inez Tenenbaum.

The CPSC is investigating around 14 fatalities over the past 20 years affiliated with sling-style child carriers, including 3 deaths in 2009. 12 of the fatalities involved children younger than 4 months of age. The vast majority of these deaths involved a low birth weight twin, breathing issues, or were born prematurely.

Slings can pose 2 distinct types of suffocation hazards to infants. In the first few months of life, infants have difficulty controlling their heads because their neck muscles are not yet sufficiently developed. The baby sling carrier material may press against an infant's nose and mouth, blocking the baby's breathing and rapidly suffocating a baby in just a minute or two. Also, keeping your child in a curled position is asking for trouble. This blocks the airway by bending the chin onto their chest and can impede the oxygen supply. Children have been known to suffocate this way as they are not able to cry for help. The CPSC has recommended that parents and caregivers make certain the baby's face is not covered and may be seen at all times to the sling's wearer. In short, please be careful before using your baby sling and read the directions!
