A Young Man Needs Therapy For His Intense Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Alcohol And Drug Dependency
Approximately eight months ago I had lunch with a thirty-three-year-old male named Benjamin who experiences severe depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As mentioned by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol dependency and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship problems.
As affirmed by Benjamin, he is so dejected by his relationship issues and by both of his medical issues that he in actual fact has no enthusiasm to accomplish much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed four semesters of graduate school in Italian.
Benjamin's circumstance makes me question if he is an example of a person who can look in the mirror and see his substance abuse and drinking problems and do something positive about these issues. Or, on the other hand, if he is someone who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol dependency rehab that leads to long-term recovery.
It may be asked how treatment would help his drug and alcohol dependency. First of all, there are several recently produced doctor-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin through the drug and alcohol detox process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to admit the fact that there is entirely nothing beneficial about drug addiction and unhealthy and excessive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the path to legal problems, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, and possibly a premature death. Fourth, treatment for his relationship issues and his depression might help him deal with these mental health problems more successfully and possibly create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.
Due to the fact that Benjamin doesn't have the motivation to achieve much of anything in his life, it is clear that he badly needs some hope for a healthier life. And the sad thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he requires for his acute depression and alcoholism and drug addiction and stay with his treatment protocol.
Benjamin is simply too young to be defeated in life. He doesn't comprehend this at this time in his life but if he can learn how to remove himself from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol therapy and get the treatment he needs for his severe depression, he can redirect his life and begin living with passion, self-respect, and direction.
Stronger relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a meaningful life are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to get the professional rehabilitation he needs, follow through with his therapy protocol, live his life in a healthy and drug and alcohol-free way, and learn how to cultivate a more positive attitude about his life.
