A Health Instructor Instructs Her Students About The Significance Of Alcohol Addiction Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most financially challenged co-ed high school in the region. Even though she had been teaching for only two years, she had already established a reputation as an instructor with instructional approaches that encouraged and stimulated students to learn and to think.

For example, one Thursday afternoon at 1:30 she addressed the students in her class and said the following: "For the next week we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based point of view and we are also going to learn about several of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific standpoint."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will without a doubt show that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol addicted individual, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the greater the possibility that she or he is an alcoholic."

Miss Jackson then explained to the the pupils that each student would be responsible for studying three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the rest of the class by way of a fifteen minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to go over the list and rank the top nine alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After around five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and informed the pupils in her class that after she assesses the numbers, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked the pupils in her classroom to look over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within 40 or 50 seconds, virtually every pupil in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was evident that the pupils had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. As an illustration, virtually every person in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, specifically, "Do you feel exceedingly nauseous when you stop drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the students in her classroom why this answer was the most unambiguous indicator of alcohol dependency. She underscored the fact that the chief difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.

Basically this means that when an alcohol addicted individual abruptly stops drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol addicted person, the students started to grasp the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the excitement manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had motivated and encouraged the students in her class to stop and think about an essential social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
